詹姆斯麥迪遜大學(xué)被美國政府的“卡內(nèi)基教育發(fā)展基金會”列為錄取率較低（競爭力較強）的學(xué)校之一。2009年10月2日，美國最古老的本科“斐陶斐榮譽學(xué)會”把詹姆斯麥迪遜大學(xué)列入他們學(xué)術(shù)榮譽學(xué)會章程當(dāng)中。在美國，只有10%的學(xué)院和大學(xué)被“斐陶斐榮譽學(xué)會”授予此榮譽。詹姆斯麥迪遜大學(xué)提供超過200個學(xué)位，當(dāng)中包括學(xué)士、碩士、教育專家和博士學(xué)位。學(xué)校擁有21個學(xué)系學(xué)院：

2005年6月24日，董事會通過學(xué)院提案創(chuàng)立了視覺和表演藝術(shù)學(xué)院，并把該學(xué)院從“藝術(shù)和文學(xué)學(xué)院”當(dāng)中獨立出來。視覺和表演藝術(shù)學(xué)院主要負(fù)責(zé)藝術(shù)、藝術(shù)史、音樂、戲劇和舞蹈，和麥迪遜藝術(shù)收藏學(xué)術(shù)課程。2007年1月9號，弗吉尼亞州高等教育機構(gòu)批準(zhǔn)JMU重新成立新的工程學(xué)院。該學(xué)系從2008年秋季開始接收本科學(xué)生。該學(xué)院教學(xué)以科學(xué)當(dāng)中的持續(xù)性為主題，并以環(huán)境科工程為主導(dǎo)，提供綜合專業(yè)工程學(xué)位。
